Mission

Our priority is to provide access to quality education and healthcare for women and children. We believe education and healthcare are not privileges, but human rights.

Narmin Mekawy

Narmin Mekawy M.S is the President of Better Education Foundation. She obtained a M.S. in Neuroscience and Developmental Disabilities from the City University of New York, College of Staten Island. This is the same institution where she also completed a B.S. in Biology.  She is a first-generation American of Egyptian and Moroccan descent. She is currently working in a Molecular Neuroscience lab studying models of neuropsychiatric disorders. She is also involved in a Neurobiology Disease lab studying the physiological functions of taurine and its implications in the development of the nervous system.

Narmin co-founded BEF after discussing the variance within the quality of education. Poverty-stricken populations struggle to provide for their families and are often unable to send their children to school. Education is highly expensive and many governments do not invest in good quality education. Aside from this issue, there is a large problem of social norms accepted for girls. Less progresive countries still believe a girl should be denied education and married young. Child marriages are most common in countries that suffer from poverty. Increased education promotes the elimination of  child-marriages. In progressive countries, there is still variance between communities, because of factors including socioeconomic status and race. Narmin hopes to provide the resources to eliminate education inequality and health equity that is a by-product of economic inequality.
